With time, viewers along with Jess got to know the real Schmidt, who was actually a very sweet guy with some unresolved traumas both related to his family and to his weight and who cared a lot about his friends. Schmidt had the best development of all the main characters in New Girl , and by the end of the show, he was married to Cece and they had a daughter, Ruth, with a flash-forward revealing they have a son at some point.
Speaking to EW in , Greenfield revealed the original plan for Schmidt and how he pushed to have it changed. Greenfield ended up becoming the breakout star of New Girl , and Schmidt continues to be a favorite among fans of the show, as well as an unforgettable character thanks to Greenfield's improvisation skills. Schmidt was not only the breakout character of the show, but he also opened many doors for Max Greenfield and boosted his career.
Another reason Schmidt's birthday is in doubt is that Schmidt actually says his zodiac sign in the show. The sign he mentions is not Cancer, but Sagittarius. Those born under the sign of Sagittarius celebrate their birthday between November 23 and December They tend to be honest to a fault, never wanting to sugarcoat the truth, which does seem in line with Schmidt's approach to friendship.

Just when he does it isn't clear. Elizabeth remarks that she broke up with him because he started losing weight in college and that's when he changed.
